U.S. Plans To Develop Over 18GW Of Wind And Solar Projects in Mexico

Mexico has secured commitments from 17 U.S. companies to develop 1,854MW of solar and wind energy, according to a release from the office of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Based on these agreements, the two parties are exploring the possibility of developing solar energy projects near the U.S. border, as well as sending power to the transmission network in California and other U.S. states.

Speaking at the Large Economies Energy and Climate Forum, an online conference hosted by U.S. President Joe Biden, López Obrador said Mexico is committed to a 35 percent clean energy electricity target by 2024.

He also revealed that the first phase of a 1GW photovoltaic power plant in Puerto Peñasco, Sonora state in northwestern Mexico, will begin construction.

A report released earlier this year by the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) concluded that Mexico "is on track to become a clean energy powerhouse."
